When We Were Young

When we were children, our books urged us relentlessly to become the best that we can be.

Be brave, have courage. Show unrestrained kindness and generosity.

We were told that if we are all those things (and more), if our hearts are big enough, and our minds filled with the right ideas (whatever they are), we will rule the world one day – sometimes, they meant this quite literally.

Now that we have grown up, we found out that either these books have lied to us, or that we have failed them.

I wonder, which is which?
